I googled the definition of ‘adventure‘; here was the resulting answer I found, ‘an unusual and exciting or daring experience.’ On a weekly basis I will receive many questions about the way I choose to live and how I fund my frequent travels. As you dive into this weeks edition of 7 Days Later, I’ll elaborate more below.
Having great people around, makes even a trip to the supermarket an adventure.
To set the scene, here is a few questions I get asked very frequently.
– How do you afford to travel so often?
– Do you get paid to travel?
– What is your job?
– I want to do what you do, how do I go about it?
There is a few overlapping themes in the above questions, along with some underlying circumstances that people don’t see in my life and the lives of others that people follow.
Since arriving back in Adelaide, I have been on the hunt for a job. I was dropping resumes left, right and centre, in places that were hiring and places that weren’t. I genuinely like to work, whether it’s on my own personal projects or for a greater goal. Whilst grabbing lunch with a mate the other day, he asked me the same question, “How do you afford to travel so often?
My response was simple. “I work hard for period of time, be it 2 months, 3 months, 6 months – then book my ticket, and go.”
He was surprised, at the simplicity, spontaneity and courage to get up and go. For me it has always seemed so straight forward, the love of adventure and want to travel has long been one of my core values and been the driver of my actions, as a result, this is what I do. However, I also think adventure is too strongly associated with travelling overseas. For many of us, we are lucky to live in such amazing places yet we don’t even know it. Whilst being home, the adventure for me never stops. Every night, I will make my way down to sunset – the South Australian coast is long and the surprise that awaits each night I find a lot of excitement in. This for me is an adventure. I understand it’s not quite the same as hiking for 12 hours, or zipping around an unknown island on a dodgy moped but it’s fun. For me this is so important as it removes the ‘holiday mindset’, I am not waiting for the next trip but instead living fully in the day at hand.
I love sunrises.
Set your first hour of the day up to be a good one.
This week I landed myself a job, actually, two of them! The first one is in a factory, a very large industrial paint factory. This meant 5:15am starts, which ensured I was able to see the sunrise every day. Again, despite going to work a job that isn’t ‘glamourous’ or seen as ‘fun’, on the way to work I was able to watch the sunrise and listen to some of my favourite music. Within the first hour of the day, I’ve set myself up well, had a great breakfast and done something that makes me happy – for me, the ball is now rolling in a positive direction for the rest of the day.

In between travels, I have worked a vast array of jobs. I have been extremely fortunate to have very flexible employers, which through solid communication on both ends allowed my intentions to travel very clear. Some jobs I have worked for extended periods of time include: Working in an industrial paint factory, at multiple shoe stores, on the sales floor of an art gallery, seafood markets, at the Australian Open for Tennis, as a barista/juicer, a tennis/squash coach plus a few more. I am extremely grateful that through a lot of these jobs, by being open for chat, I have met and made friends from all around the world or been given places I should add to my bucket list.
The point I’m trying to get across is that if you have a goal to travel, go out and work. Work really hard. From here it’s up to you to determine how long you want to go away for and how far you want to go. I often find that by booking a flight as early as possible gives you something to strive for and work towards, so even on the days where it feels like a grind, you have a bigger picture in mind. I am a big believer that as long as you are being proactive daily, things will eventually fall into place. (Maybe not how you envisioned, but they will fall into place.)
Home is just as beautiful as being on the road.
Currently, I do not get paid to travel. Yes, it is a goal of mine to have a job which allows this, but as it stands now, I am not quite there. It’s important to remember that social media is usually just a timeline of people’s best highlights (literally one second out of 86400 in their day) or a creative outlet. Instagram essentially is no different to a painters art studio, but instead we have our art or highlights readily accessible in the palm of our hand. Find inspiration from what you see, but don’t compare this to your life. Find inspiration by exposing yourself to unique experiences and new role models, this will open your mind up a lot more. Learn to love to observe, but not compare.

The best thing about having a job with an early start was that I was up to see every sunrise and then free to see every sunset! Here’s the rest of my favourite pictures from through this week.
If you’re working towards the bigger goal – write it down, say it out loud and project it to the world! If you have questions, leave me a comment 🙂
Go get it!

Impress yourself, and not others.
Compare to yourself, and no one else.
It’s so easy to compare, it’s a natural instinct.
You won’t ever be able to stop making comparisons, but like the good food you put into your body, do the same with what you put into your mind. Instead of generating the feelings of envy or jealousy, why don’t your make yourself proud because you compared you to you. As a result, you’ll see how much you improved as human. There is nothing more powerful, than measuring yourself against yourself. Compare real to real, not your behind the scenes to someone else highlight reel.

New camera this week! Can’t wait to have some real big prints up soon.
Port Willunga.
Accidental shot, still learning how to use it.
It’s felt like summer all week and it’s late April!
First shot on the new camera. Maddi at sunset.
Keep smashing it mate, loving your work/words!
Thanks legend. Will do my best, appreciate it.
‘Learn to love to observe, but not to compare.’ YES!
So important!
You mentioned meeting people from around the world. Have you had offers to have a free place to stay, if you ever ventured into their neck of the woods? Would you take them up on their offer?
Yes I sure have! In fact, I do it on nearly every trip. Staying with people, whether it be family, friends, friends of friends, off the couch surfing app or instagram – it saves me a lot of money.
Loving it all Joshy! You’re a real slice of inspiration, we definitely need to spend more time with you : )
Love
