I’ve found my groove again.  My goal at the start of the year was to be consistent with my running and blogging. To put out a weekly blog every week, and to run 3000km by year end, which equates to an average of 57km a week. The running I’m on top of, but since releasing my book, I’ve been a bit slack with my book. This week I spent a lot of time in Kingley Vale national park running and recording podcasts. Whilst being amongst the fields of Kingley Vale, here’s a life analogy that ran through my head.

The way I sometimes think of life is like a car racing video game. In this instance, we’ll use the classic game of mario kart for example. You can select your character, and you can be any character you like. As I write this, I realise that the last sentence also doubles as an analogy for life. So here we are, with full choice of who we want to be. You scroll through all the options, and you pick the one (or way of life) that resonates most with you.

Whilst scrolling through the characters to pick, you see they all have different characteristics. In Mario Kart, each kart has varying levels of speed, acceleration, handling, weight and off-road. As you flick through the different characters, you notice that these levels of each characteristic change. Some accelerate really well, but handle poorly and vice versa.

These different levels are how I look at life sometimes. If I look at these characteristics from a personal point of view, I might choose fitness, social, creativity, and personal projects. Within these larger categories of life, all have our sub-categories where we channel our attention; for example, mine would be running, calisthenics, blogging and writing a book. Like the video game, it’s near impossible to get these/or keep all these ‘life levels’ all up high. I will be the first to admit, I have been slack with my blogging yet at the same have put a lot more effort into training and book promotion. And within training, as I’ve been running so much more and moving around a lot, my calisthenics and work at the gym has dropped.

If you look at some of the most successful people, take Elon Musk, for example, he highly prioritizes work, creativity, and innovation yet at times his relationships take a huge toll and potentially his fitness too (that was detailed in his book). That brings up another discussion of having a ‘balanced life’ vs. putting your everything into one discipline. That’s off today’s theme, but have a think about it and let me know what your thought is on that!

All this aside, my goal at the start of the year was to be consistent. And hopefully, reap the rewards that come with consistency. So unlike Mario kart where the levels stay the same over the course of the game, I think we can continually improve all the levels of our life, even whilst some aspects aren’t receiving our full attention. And this can be done through consistency of action. Running is an easy example; if our training decreases, instead of not running at all, we can still get out the door for 10-15 minutes a day instead of 45-60 minutes. And when we are ready, we can pick the time up again. However, by making it out the door we continue the positive habit/s we have built and the mental strength to continue on when things are tough or not ideal. With this consistency, all levels across gain a few extra ‘bars of experience’ and we slowly become better often without noticing.

So how does all this tie together with my recent week in England? Well, I’ve continued running, and trying to spend as much time as possible in nature through running (even though the adventure or ‘off-roading’ bar is down) along with recording more podcasts and blogging. I must say it feels good to be up to date and plan to be back on the weekly post routine like I started with.

It’s all a big journey at the end of the day, and we live to learn. That’s how I do it anyway, live first and learn later.

Keep appreciating the one percenters! My one percenter from the other day was seeing a burning sunset in Kingley Vale own my run home. I was hurting from the run, but England definitely isn’t renowned for its fiery sunsets so this was a very special little moment.

Get after it!

Big Love,

JL
